Partners In Policymaking® is an international programme. SAMS is licensed to replicate the programme in New Zealand. Partners In Policymaking® aims to provide leadership training to enable people with intellectual disabilities and families to maximise their ability to positively influence policy development in New Zealand. Emphasis is placed on individuals developing skills to effectively advocate for support and services that increase independence and inclusion. It is anticipated that participants will join a growing network of individuals who are working for positive change. It is imagined that Partner graduates can change the future by influencing public and service policy today.
The course is free to participants and one session per month is held over eight months. Each session starts at 12:30pm on a Friday and finishes 3:00pm on a Saturday. SAMS will pay for associated travel, accommodation and meals. Because participants “live in” there is the opportunity for them to network and share information outside the course structure.
Each session examines existing policy, current practice and possibilities for future development. Topics include: Inclusive Education, Strategies for Making your Case, Living, Advocacy and Effective Communication. A wide range of speakers are invited to contribute.
